Mutton Dalcha


This three step recipe is protein packed where tender goat meat is pressure cooked and then further cooked in two different lentils and then with bottle gourd . Bottle gourd acts as a negative calorie which reduces the sharpness of the recipe. This is usually served with ghee cumin rice after Iftaari during the holy month. 


What You Need:

  • 500 grams Mutton Shoulder pieces
  • 40 grams masoor dal
  • 40 grams toor dal
  • 1 small bottlegourd cut into big slices
  • 2 small onion cut into julians
  • 2 tomatoes chopped
  • 1 tbsp ginger paste
  • 1 tbsp garlic paste
  • 2 green chilies slit into half
  • Few curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp cumin seeds
  • 2 cinamon stick
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 big cardamom
  • 3 bay leaf
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Few coriander leaves
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tbsp garam masala powder
  • Juice of 1 lime or tamarind juice


Steps To Make:

  • Wash toor dal and masoor dal in water .
  • Pressure cook with salt, ½ tsp turmeric powder, green chilies and curry leaves and 1 cup water.
  • Pressure cook on high for 2 whistles, lower the whistles and cook for 5 minutes on low.
  • Switch off flame and let the pressure drop down completely.
  • Next add 2 tbsp oil in another pressure cooker.
  • Add the whole spices and cumin seeds
  • Add ginger garlic paste , cut onions and cook till onion turns brown
  • Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin and coriander powder.
  • Cook for a min and then add the chopped tomatoes.
  • Once tomatoes are nicely cooked, add mutton pieces, salt and mix everything well.
  • Add 1 cup of water and pressure cook for 10-15 minutes on low flame.
  • Switch off the flame. Let pressure drop down.
  • Open the lid, add cooked lentils, sliced bottlegourd, coriander leaves and garam masala powder.
  • Pressure cook on high for 3 minutes.
  • Open lid and add tamarind juice or lemon juice as you like it.
  • Give it a boil for another one minute.
  • Mutton Dalcha is ready to be served with Jeera Rice.
